He married Ella Smith; they had one daughter who died at the age of three years. Captain John's Civil War record was one of which a man could be justly proud. He entered the Army as a Private in Company "C", Third N. Y. Calvary, which was raised in Rochester, N. Y., and was soon promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant of the regiment. In Sept. of 1863, he as commissioned Second Lieutenant and Acting Quartermaster of the 155th N. Y. Cavalry; and later, Quartermaster of the First Brigade, First Division, "The Army of West Virginia". He was retired with rank of Captain. After the war he went South, where he bought property in Citronelle, Ala.; here he spent the remainder of his life. WellsLR, p 7.
