As a young man he rsfused to take sides in the Anti-Rent War in the country, and with his father was held prisoner for a short time. In 1848, he came to Western New York where he met and married Lois Wells, on Cot 19, 1854. She was the daughter of Moses Wells and was born Jan. 27, 1832. Philetus was a farmer, living most of his life on rented farms in the TOwnship of Wheatland, N. Y. In 1884, he invented the first practical Bean Harvester, much the same as the one still in use, and he made the first flat divider board that was used on the Reaper. To his great disappointment he never realized any financial benefit from his invention because of his faith in a man he hired to make his machine. The original model of his Bean Harvester is in the Museum of the Caledonia Historical Society. Having a fmaily of small children, he did not enlist for service during the Civil War, but hired a substitute. Meanwhile he was helping soldiers' families by harvesting their grain, or helping them sort out in any way that he possibly could. His brother-in-law, Seth Wells, was wounded in the battle of Gettysburd and was taken to a Baltimore Hospital. Philetus went there to care for him and stayed for three months as a volunteer nurse.
