HARMON RULIFFSON (113), born June 28, 1798, Schoharie Co., married Susannah Wellman Stephens - a widow with one child, Phebe. Harmon dies May 15, 1886, in Russell, Minn., at the home of his daughter, Mariette Wells, who brought his body back to Stamford, N.Y. to be buried beside his wife. She had died Mar. 19, 1841, leaving him with a family of eleven children. Phebe had married and died in 1840. WellsLR, p 4. EARLY DAYS OF HARMON RULIFFSON II One time about the year 1814 a young millwright by the name of Mr. Stephens, undertook to blaze an ox trail from the Hudson River to Lake Erie and locate mill sites along the way. With him in this undertaking went four young men from the neighborhood og Gilboa, Schoharie Co., N.Y. They were Harmon and Isaac Rulifson, Benjamin Frazee and Elisha Stewart. While nearing the completion of their task they boarded with a family by the name of Wellman in Cattaraugus County. In this family were several daughters og marriageable age. The outcome of this venture was that three of the young men married Wellman girls and the fourth married a neighbor of theirs, a Miss Bly. Susannah Wellman married Mr. Stephens; Abihial married Slisha Stewart; Maria married Benjamin Frazee; and Margaret Bly married Isaac Ruliffson. Susannah was a wife, a mother and a widow in less than a year. After the death of her husband, she and her infant daughter, Phebe, born May 1, 1816, returned to her father's home. About two years later, Harmon Ruliffson journeyed again over the trail he had helped to cut through the forest, to claim for his wife the young widow. Their honeymoon was spent on horseback as they took the long trail back to Schoharie Co. Near Stamford, N.Y., in the heart of the Catskilllls, these four young men bought farms and there brought up their families. There, I believe, they are all buried. I have visited the graves of my great grandparents there at the foot of Mt. Utseantha. Phebe was adopted by Harmon Ruliffson, and he and Susannah had eleven children. It is said that Harmon owned the first stove brought into that part of the country. In 1832 Harmon took his family to Monroe Co. with the idea of purchasing a farm near his brother Isaac in the township of Henrietta. While here their youngest child Mary died. Susannah was not happy here and begged her husband to go back to their old home in the Catskills before the next child would be born. In June of 1834 they started the long, tiresome journey back by wagon, of course. They had gone as far as Oneida when Susannah decided she could go no farther. There Harmon W. was born. Harmon went on with the children and came back a few days later for his wife and their eight child. At the time of her mother's death in 1842, Cathrine, the oldest child, was about to be married, but she decided to stay home one year to care for the family. A little later Mr. Ruliffson married a Miss Stewart. She found the task of caring for this household a difficult one, and one day, it is said, she gathered up her belongings, then went out to the saw mill where Harmon was at work and told him that she had put up with the children just as long as she could and would he please take her home to her mother. He complied with her request. When he left her he said that if she ever wished to return, she might do so, but that he would not ask her to come. She never came back. This bit of family history was told to me by Serena Clark Wells, granddaughter of Harmon, just a few weeks before her death in 1934. She was then in her eighty-fifth year. Harmon was my great grandfather. WellsLR, p 4-5.
