He changed the spelling of his last name when Ernie went into the Service in World War I. He was a butcher in Kasota, MN. During 1870 and 1871 he served in the Cavalry in the German Army, but was never in a battle. About the time that he was discharged from the Army, his sister's husband died and she wanted him to oversee eighteen workmen. John did not want like that, so he came to the United States. The trip was from 1872 to 1875. he returned to Germany and sent his two brothers over to the US. They, in turn, were to send for him but never did. He returned to the Unites States on his own for a second visit from 1877 to 1879. He looked up his brothers, one in New York and one in Chicago, and neither of them would acknowledge him. He came to the United States again in 1882 and stayed permanently. He had friends in the Saint Peter, MN area and visited them on each trip. Elizabeth Marie Pitchelies was working at Sanger's Hotel in Kasota. They had met in Germany. Erwin Charles Rulifson [3] reported his name as John William Johns and his birth date as 1852.

He married Doris Edith Johnson 9 September 1944 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co, MN. (Doris Edith Johnson #3148.) Doris was born 26 August 1919 in Crosby, Crow Wing Co, MN. She resides street unknown, in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co, MN date unknown. Never married.
